To optimize the resumes, I used prompts that focused on targeting specific job roles and improving professional structure. My prompts included requests like “Transform this resume to target a marketing job,” and later, “Transform this resume to target an accounting job.” These prompts guided the AI to emphasize relevant skills, rewrite bullet points, and organize the résumé in a clearer, more polished format.
Between the original and AI-generated versions, several changes happened. 1) The language became more professional, bullet points were quantified with metrics, and the content was reframed to highlight transferable skills for each new field. 2) AI also restructured the layout into clean sections: education, experience, skills, and certifications, making the résumé more readable and industry-appropriate. Each version was tailored to fit the expectations of either marketing or accounting employers.
Through this process, I learned that specific, goal-oriented prompts lead to better, more relevant results. The more clearly I described the job role and tone I wanted, the more effectively the AI tailored the résumé. Prompt engineering is really about knowing your audience and guiding the AI to focus on what matters most to them.
